Plot summary
Joel Emanuel Hägglund, known as Joe Hill, leaves his home in Gävle, Sweden, and travels to the United States with his brother in the early 1900s. The brothers soon lose touch with each other, and Joe takes a series of jobs. The hardship and injustice he meets along the way draw him to the Industrial Workers of the World, a banned organization for laborers without a trade. Demonstrations and public speeches are outlawed, so he puts the union's message into songs and sings them with the Salvation Army. His allies increase in number, and so do his opponents.
