Plot summary
At the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve, family and friends decorate the tree before the children, Marie and Fritz, are brought in to see it. A mysterious guest arrives: Herr Drosselmeyer, a councilman, magician and Marie's godfather, who brings four lifelike dolls that dance for the party. He then gives Marie a wooden nutcracker shaped like a little man. Fritz breaks it, and Drosselmeyer repairs it. After the others go to bed, Marie creeps back to the parlor for another look at the nutcracker. At midnight, mice swarm the room, the Christmas tree grows to a dizzying height, and the nutcracker comes to life, leading gingerbread and tin soldiers against the mice and their king.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- During production, Macaulay Culkin's father and manager Kit Culkin repeatedly sparred with the producers, threatening to withdraw his son's likeness and support from all promotional materials; the Kevin Kline narration was kept anyway at the behest of George Balanchine's trustee Barbara Horgan.
- Macaulay Culkin was cast as the Nutcracker Prince because of his stardom and because he had danced Fritz Stahlbaum for the School of American Ballet in the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
- Emile Ardolino, the film's director, died four days before Warner Bros. released it on November 24, 1993 under the Warner Bros. Family Entertainment label.
- There had been early talk of hiring a major star such as Dustin Hoffman to play Drosselmeyer, but the role went instead to the dancer Bart Robinson Cook.
- Cinematographer Ralf D. Bode watched every film version of The Nutcracker ever produced in order to decide how he would shoot this one.
