Plot summary
Mary O'Callahan grew up in the neighborhood, where other children mocked her as Scary Mary, and she has come back after a hard fight with cancer. Joey Vitello, adrift in his twenties and still living at home with his Italian-American family, meets her again and finds the awkward girl he remembers has become beautiful. When he learns that her recovery came through a miracle, the friendship between them turns into romance, and she begins explaining her faith to him. The questions he carries home unsettle the family, whose beliefs he challenges, and the whole household goes looking for a miracle of its own.
