Plot summary
At Crystal Lake, a woman lures Jason Voorhees into a trap; she is an undercover FBI agent, and a SWAT team destroys him with a grenade launcher. His remains go to a morgue, where the coroner eats the still-beating heart, letting Jason's soul take over the man's body. Wearing the coroner, he walks out of the morgue. At the lake, a responding officer becomes his next host. Jason's surviving relatives are his half-sister Diana Kimble, Diana's daughter Jessica, and Jessica's young daughter Stephanie, whose father is Steven Freeman. Bounty hunter Creighton Duke learns that only a member of Jason's bloodline can destroy him permanently, and Steven Freeman is determined to reach Jessica before Jason does.

- A shower scene with Kari Keegan got director Adam Marcus removed from the set after she refused to do nudity; producer Sean S. Cunningham took over directing for the final days, and about half the film was reshot.
- Paramount Pictures, which had released the first eight Friday the 13th films, gave New Line Cinema the rights to Jason Voorhees but forgot to hand over the Friday the 13th title, and New Line then shelved a Freddy-versus-Jason film.
- Producer Sean S. Cunningham had Dean Lorey throw out Jay Huguely's script and write a completely new one in just four days, cutting Elias Voorhees so Jason stayed the central character.
- Tony Todd auditioned for the bounty hunter Creighton Duke, a role that went to Steven Williams; Adam Marcus and Dean Lorey wanted Laurie Holden as Jessica Kimble, but Sean Cunningham overruled them and pushed for Kari Keegan.
- The film's DVD holds two cuts: a theatrical version made to win an R rating from the MPAA after the film was first rated NC-17, and an unrated director's cut three minutes longer.
- Adam Marcus first wrote the Steven Freeman role as Tommy Jarvis from parts 4 to 6, but New Line Cinema owned only the rights to Jason and could not legally use Tommy.

The final shot, Freddy Krueger's clawed hand rising to grab Jason's mask, set up the crossover Freddy vs. Jason, which had been in development hell since 1987 and was finished in 2003.- Production began on July 20, 1992, in Los Angeles, and producer Sean S. Cunningham asked for the film to be shot at twenty-two frames per second instead of the usual twenty-four.
