Plot summary
In a remote village in Kerala, a buffalo slips its bindings before dawn and gets away into the hills, leaving the butcher Kalan Varkey and his assistant Antony without the animal they meant to slaughter. A haystack then catches fire; the whole village turns out to put it out, and the men hold the buffalo responsible. They set off after it. The police stay out of it, since killing cattle is illegal, and only tell people to remain indoors. Through the day the hunters fail to corner the animal, while a rubber plantation, a drink vendor's cart and the village bank and store are wrecked. The villagers blame Varkey. For help they turn to Kuttachan, a poacher known in the area, whose return Antony dislikes.
