Plot summary

In the Périgord region of France in 1815, Jacquou grows up with his parents until a quarrel with the arrogant Count de Nansac brings the family down. While his father is hunted and then taken, Jacquou's mother works as a laundry maid in the count's castle without revealing who she is, and the boy becomes acquainted with the count's daughter Galiote and her caretaker Lina. Left with no one after both his parents are gone, he comes under the protection of the priest Bonal, serves as an altar boy, and grows into a man set on making the count answer for what was done.
