Plot summary
Back in Moscow as Tsar, Ivan IV designs a new order: the land is to remain Russian always, and the boyars are its caretaker managers, unable to hand it to outsiders. Because the change takes power from the hereditary landowners, the boyars unite against his plans and he is left alone and friendless. Stung that Prince Andrei Kurbsky defected and placed Russian land in Polish hands, he leans on his landless supporters under Aleksei Basmanov and the Oprichniki to press his authority on the boyars. Needing someone he can trust, he summons his old friend Kolychev, now the monk Philip, and installs him as metropolitan bishop in Moscow. Philip agrees to remain his friend only if he may plead for anyone condemned to death.
