Louis Wolheim
Biography
Louis Wolheim was an American actor of stage and screen who entered films in 1914 on the advice of Lionel and John Barrymore, after studying engineering at Cornell University and working as a mining engineer. His rough appearance typecast him as gangsters, executioners and prisoners, and he appeared in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Orphans of the Storm (1921), Howard Hughes's Two Arabian Knights (1927), where he played a rambunctious sergeant, and The Racket (1928). On Broadway he acted in ten plays from 1919 to 1925, winning considerable acclaim as Yank in the original production of Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape, and he translated Henri Bernstein's The Claw into English. He later appeared in talkies including All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), wrote the screenplay for The Greatest Power and directed The Sin Ship, his only directing credit. He died in 1931.
