Plot summary
Thomas Neumann's law practice flourishes, his marriage to Bettina is happy, and he keeps a mistress besides. When the mistress announces that she wants a child, Thomas agrees, and a sperm test then tells him he is infertile. The question shifts to his own children and who fathered them. His brother Johannes, a priest, offers to help him find out. Thomas recalls two friends from the vacations he and Bettina once took together and invites both men to the house for comparison, since genetic testing did not exist then. One visitor has lost his mind and the other is blind, and their presence throws the household into confusion, while a business partner from overseas is being entertained there as well.
