Plot summary
The planet's air is toxic, and most of humanity now lives on a station near Io, one of Jupiter's moons. Sam Walden is one of the few people still on Earth. She lives by herself at high elevation, where the air can still be breathed, and tries to raise bees able to survive the atmosphere. She aims to use the bees to help clean the air. Her boyfriend lives on the Io station and wants her to leave on the last shuttle. A storm sends a toxic cloud through Sam's shelter, killing her bees. Soon after, a man named Micah arrives by helium balloon. He wants to reach the launch site, but first he asks to speak with Sam's father, who once urged people to stay on Earth. Sam tells him her father is doing field work elsewhere.
