Plot summary
Zim reappears after a long absence, and his human nemesis Dib Membrane, now overweight, confronts him. Zim explains that the disappearance was meant to leave Dib too physically unfit to oppose him, and announces the start of Phase Two. Contacting the Almighty Tallest, Zim discovers he cannot remember what Phase Two is. Dib gets back into shape with help from his sister Gaz, while their father, Professor Membrane, hands him a prototype Membracelet built to draw on the energy of the world's children, and makes clear his disappointment that Dib still believes in aliens. Dib goes to face Zim and finds him in despair: Zim and his robot assistant GIR can recall nothing of the plan, and have learned that the Irken Armada has no intention of invading Earth. Zim surrenders.

- At a July 2018 San Diego Comic-Con panel, Jhonen Vasquez showed a trailer assembled from unedited first-take animation, with original music by Kevin Manthei, and said most of its shots would be sent back overseas to be re-animated.
- In November 2016, Harvey Beaks and Chowder creator C. H. Greenblatt told a fan on Tumblr that Jhonen Vasquez was making an Invader Zim movie for Nickelodeon; Vasquez denied it on Twitter before Nickelodeon announced the film in April 2017.
- The crew behind the film wanted Jeff Goldblum to join the voice cast, but they never managed to get him.
- Nickelodeon first wanted a new Invader Zim television series; Jhonen Vasquez pitched a six-episode miniseries instead, then switched to a film because he thought that would be "infinitely less stressful".
