Plot summary
At Whiton University during pledge week, a homecoming party ends with sorority member Kylie Martinez found unconscious in a room with three fraternity brothers. After she is mocked online, Kylie asks fellow sorority member Shayleen for help, and Shayleen brings the matter to Ellery Scott. Ellery agrees to investigate, especially because her brother Wes has previously been accused of sexual assault. Soon students begin turning up murdered, and Ellery races to learn what a recurring exclamation mark means.

- John Berardo's Initiation began as Dembanger, a short film he made as a class assignment at the University of Southern California; the assignment called for a short dealing with social change, and he chose social media after seeing how easily people could create Facebook profiles.
- Berardo decided to expand his short into a feature after the 2014 film Unfriended came out, but wanted to tackle social media differently and avoid slasher tropes he called inherently misogynistic.
