Plot summary
In the summer of 1951, Marcus Messner, the son of a kosher butcher in Newark, New Jersey, has won a scholarship to Winesburg College, a small Christian school in Ohio, which lets him put off the draft. His synagogue has just mourned a classmate killed in Korea, and his father is rattled by the war deaths of boys like his son. Studious and introverted, Marcus feels cut off from the other students at Winesburg, Jewish ones included. He meets Olivia Hutton, a freethinking French literature major from a Cleveland family, who seems as out of place as he does.
