Plot summary
Most of the world's population is gone after a nuclear war, and a small group of survivors has taken refuge in a secluded valley. Steve Morrow, Jada, Joanna Ramsey, Capt. John Ramsey, Mickey Brown, Tim Henderson and Granger Morrow are among them. The valley offers some protection, but radiation levels keep climbing, and past a dense mist are other survivors who were changed by the radiation. Those mutants are cannibalistic and hungry, and they are said to have telepathic powers. The group must keep them out while also keeping the peace among themselves, because the survivors argue and complain a great deal, which does not help their situation.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- For In the Year 2889, American International Pictures handed director Larry Buchanan the script of Roger Corman's 1955 film Day the World Ended, written by Lou Rusoff, and the result was an almost line-for-line, scene-for-scene remake.
- Because it was an even lower-budget remake of Corman's low-budget original, the film needed a new title, so AIP used a title it already had registered for a Jules Verne project that was never made.
