Plot summary
Sonny Wisecarver is a fifteen-year-old boy in California in 1944 who is known as the Woo Woo Kid. He takes up with Judy, a neighbor of twenty-one who is raising two children, and the pair run away to Colorado to be married. Police there bring them back to California, where the case becomes a sensation in the press and Sonny is written up as a great romantic. The marriage is annulled. Judy receives three years' probation, is ordered to church for moral training and must repay the county for the trip home, while Sonny is told to keep away from her and stay out of town for the summer.

- Screenwriters Bob Kosberg and David Simon paid the real Sonny Wisecarver $500 plus seven percent of what they made selling the screenplay for the rights to his life story. They could not buy the rights from the two women romantically involved with Wisecarver, so the women's names were changed in the script.
- Director Phil Alden Robinson said every situation in the film really happened in Sonny Wisecarver's life, with court transcripts and newspaper quotes used verbatim. Only the timeframe was fictionalized, condensed from two years to six months, and Wisecarver's age was changed to fifteen.
