Plot summary
Danny travels from San Francisco back to his family's home to spend his last months there, dying of late-stage AIDS. The upper-crust suburban house is the same icy-cool place he left years earlier. His father Martin, a middle-aged businessman, cannot relate to him and has never accepted that his son is gay. His sister Anne resents how close Danny and their mother have grown, a bond she stands outside of, and she is ambiguous about his sexuality. Janet, his mother, feels guilty for having kept her son at a distance. Myrna, a live-in nurse, is also staying in the house.

- Christopher Reeve directed most of the film from a room off set, watching and listening via TV monitors and headphones, because the hissing sounds from his respirator would have ruined the actors' voice recordings. He gave instructions through a microphone to a speaker placed next to the actors.
