Plot summary
In Italy during World War I, the American president sends Red Cross doctors and nurses to raise morale and treat the wounded, and volunteers drive ambulances and staff front-line canteens. Ernest Hemingway, nineteen, joins as an ambulance driver, though he would rather be a reporter. Shot in the leg while he tries to help a companion off the field, he is carried to a hospital, and the nurse who tends him there is Agnes von Kurowsky. Delirious on his first night, he tells her he loves her and speaks of marriage. His health worsens, and Agnes does everything she can to keep his leg from what she thinks is gangrene; an operation then sets him on the way to recovery. The two grow attached, though the difference in their ages gives her pause.

SPOILER
The film deliberately takes liberties with the real story: in real life, Ernest Hemingway's romance with nurse Agnes von Kurowsky was probably never consummated, and the two never met again after Hemingway left Italy.- Hemingway was deeply affected by his relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky and later wrote several stories about it, including his 1929 novel A Farewell to Arms.
- Hemingway was wounded as a young ambulance driver in Italy in the First World War and shared a military hospital room with Henry S. Villard, who later wrote the book the movie is based on; both men were nursed by Agnes von Kurowsky.
