Plot summary
Veronica Franco is a curious, adventurous young woman in sixteenth-century Venice. She loves Marco Venier, who is expected to become a Senator like his father, but her family is too poor for the match, and he weds a foreign noblewoman instead. Veronica's mother, Paola, still has younger daughters to marry and a son whose commission must be paid for. She offers her daughter a choice between the convent and the life of a courtesan, the cultured and well-paid companion her own mother and grandmother were. Veronica recoils from the idea until she learns that courtesans may use libraries and study. Trained by Paola to charm men even from a distance, she wins the notice of Venice's powerful men through her beauty, wit and compassion.
