Plot summary
Dan Foreman runs ad sales at Sports America, a national sports publication, where he builds clients through handshake deals and long relationships. Globecom, an international corporation that preaches synergy, acquires the magazine and demotes Dan, putting him under Carter Duryea, a 26-year-old who came out of business school. Carter pairs the magazine with Globecom's cell phone unit and with Krispity Krunch, a snack brand under the same corporate umbrella. At the same time, Dan learns that his wife is expecting another child and he takes out a second mortgage for Alex's studies at NYU, while Carter's wife of seven months leaves him and he throws himself into the job. At a dinner at Dan's house, Carter meets Alex, Dan's 18-year-old daughter, and the two are drawn to each other.
