On the trail he meets Priest, a bandit who claims his mule is giving out and tries to take Paul's horse; Abbie attacks him, and Paul takes his ammunition and water. Paul rides into Denton, a boomtown gone quiet. In the tavern he meets Gilly, who challenges him to fight and then goes for Abbie to draw him outside; Paul drops him with one punch. Gilly's father, Marshal Clyde Martin, tells Paul to leave in the morning. Mary-Anne, Ellen's younger sister, is grateful to Paul for facing Gilly down and draws him a bath.
