Plot summary
Anna Veigh teaches art and involves herself too closely in her students' private lives, so her headmaster dismisses her and arranges a position for her as a nanny. Mr. Laing hires her on the spot to care for his niece and nephew, Miles and Flora, while he is away on business. The two orphans live at Bly House, a remote estate that keeps a small staff. Anna finds them sweet and charming, though a little strange, and the estate manager, Miss Grose, is cold to the newcomer. Miles has been expelled from his school, which will not explain why. Whispers sound at night, some near Flora's bedroom, and Anna learns that the governess before her, Miss Jessel, died in a lake on the estate, and that Miss Jessel's lover, Mr. Quint, hanged himself at Bly House.
