Plot summary
After a failed attempt to rob a bank, engineer Umberto Massaciuccoli is sentenced to detention in the Ventotene prison; he had hoped the money would keep his business from going bankrupt. As his term nears its end, he is granted permission to work part-time outside, taking a job in a library and giving lessons to the prison director's daughter, who is close to graduating. At a public cultural evening, Umberto meets Morgana, who teaches dance. Because the other inmates call him professor, she believes he works at the prison as an educator rather than serving time there. He lets the misunderstanding stand and begins seeing her during the hours he is supposed to spend in the library, returning to his cell by midnight.
