Plot summary
Mats Steen, who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, spends most of his time in World of Warcraft as his body grows less able to join everyday activities. In the game he is Ibelin Redmoore, a member of the guild Starlight. He never tells the other players about his illness, worried they would treat him differently, and he writes to them only in text chat. Even so, guildmates come to count on him and share their troubles with him. His family knows little of this side of his life, and his parents fear that he is missing out. When he dies at 25, his online friends write to his family, and they begin to learn who their son was to the people he knew in Starlight.

SPOILER
In July 2023, before the film premiered, Blizzard added a replica of Mats Steen's gravestone to World of Warcraft.- Mats Steen's World of Warcraft guild Starlight had logged 42,000 pages of in-game text chats, and director Benjamin Ree was able to retrieve about 4,000 of those pages to build the film's script.
- Benjamin Ree and producer Ingvil Giske did not contact Blizzard, the owner of World of Warcraft, until three years into production; Blizzard invited them to screen the nearly finished film and gave them permission to use whatever they needed.
