Plot summary
Amin Nawabi, 36 and a successful academic in Denmark, is preparing to marry his boyfriend Kasper. A friend interviews him on camera about his life, and for the first time he describes the journey that carried him out of Afghanistan as a child, by way of Russia, to Denmark as an unaccompanied minor. He fears that what he concealed on arrival could cost him the life he has built there. Memories of Kabul, his imprisoned father and his brother Saif having to dodge the draft make it hard for him to settle in one place. A research post in the United States would take him away from Kasper.

- Selected as Denmark's entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Flee was one of five finalists and became the second foreign-language animated film after Waltz with Bashir (2008) to get that far. It also became the first film ever nominated in all three of those categories: International, Documentary and Animated Feature.
- Flee won Best Feature Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Best Animated Feature – Independent at the 49th Annie Awards, making it the first animated documentary film to win them.
- The film's core team was about ten animators and cleanup artists in Denmark plus a coloring team in France: each scene got a rough animation pass, then tightened drawings, then cleanup checking for inky, sketchy brushwork meant to look like a graphic novel, before coloring.
