Plot summary
Ava Brucks comes back to her hometown of Southport, North Carolina for the engagement party of her best friend, Danica Richards. Ava, Danica, Ava's ex Milo Griffin and Danica's fiancé Teddy Spencer drive out to watch July Fourth fireworks with their estranged friend Stevie Ward, who is fresh out of drug rehab. Parked on a cliffside road, Teddy makes a truck driven by Sam Cooper go over the edge. The group swears to keep it quiet, his father Grant, a politician, buries the accident, and he and Danica separate. A year later Ava returns for Danica's bridal shower ahead of her wedding to a new fiancé, Wyatt. Ava meets Tyler Trevino, a true crime podcaster researching a 1997 killing spree, and Danica is handed a note warning that someone knows what they did.

Additional shooting in early June 2025 added a new ending in which Madelyn Cline's character Ava survives; she had died in the original cut, and the new footage also shows Ava looking at a framed photo of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Helen Shivers at a grave site.- Sarah Michelle Gellar was approached to return as Helen Shivers, the character killed in the 1997 film, because of her friendship with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, but she declined rather than undo Helen's death.
- Jennifer Love Hewitt's return as Julie James took long negotiations because of her commitment to the television series 9-1-1, and she told the studio she would only come back if Julie were given a more substantial role.
- Camila Mendes left the film to star in Amazon MGM Studios' Masters of the Universe (2026), and Chase Sui Wonders was cast in her place.
