Plot summary
Hercules, the dwarf who shares Lucy's stage act at a London club, curses her after an evening in her dressing room. Months on, the dancing is behind her: she is married to Gino Carlesi, a wealthy Italian, and settled in a Kensington townhouse, where a long and painful delivery brings a son who is unusually heavy. The newborn scratches Lucy's cheek the moment he is placed in her arms. At home the housekeeper, Mrs. Hyde, is bitten when she reaches for the baby's chin, and a crash from upstairs reveals the cot standing in a wrecked nursery. Gino's sister Albana, a nun from a convent in Italy, arrives to meet her nephew and is troubled by what she finds, and Lucy's obstetrician, Dr. Finch, agrees to run tests on the child.
