Plot summary

Lingesan wins the Mr. Tamil Nadu bodybuilding title, which carries with it a place in the Mr. India pageant, the contest he has pursued. He has a crush on Diya, a leading supermodel whose career stalls when John, her co-star, blacklists her with advertising agencies after she rejects him. Diya picks Lingesan to replace John on a commercial shoot in China, and he gives up the pageant to go. The stylist Osma Jasmine gives him a new look and the name Lee. Shy on set, he loosens up only because Diya pretends to be drawn to him, a tactic the commercial's director suggested. When she admits the pretense, he is hurt and pours himself into modeling; the two become a successful pair.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about I (2015)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Rajinikanth revealed that Shankar had pitched him three storylines 15 years earlier; he agreed to two, which became Sivaji (2007) and Enthiran (2010), but was sceptical of the third, about an aspiring bodybuilder who becomes a deformed hunchback, and refused it.
  • The film's teaser was leaked by someone who broke into producer Ravichandran's office during the night and copied it; Ravichandran refused to make changes to the leaked teaser and released it as originally scheduled.
  • The female lead changed hands repeatedly: Evelyn Sharma was chosen by audition but opted out over language, and Samantha Ruth Prabhu was signed but left citing scheduling conflicts, before the role went to Amy Jackson.
  • Scenes for the song "Pookkalae Sattru Oyivedungal" were shot at Red Seabeach in Panjin and on the Li river in Guilin, and the canned footage was then held by the Chinese film processing studio for a year over settlement disputes with the producer.
  • Before release, the Madras High Court stayed the film until 30 January 2015 after Picturehouse Media Limited petitioned over violated financial and commercial agreements; journalist Sreedhar Pillai tweeted that the legal tussles were then solved amicably.
  • A song of five minutes' duration, "Ennodu Nee Irundhaal", was shot over 40 days, and Vikram gained weight to about 110 kg to wear the bulky costumes for the number.
  • The teaser crossed 1 million views in just 12 hours of release, making I the first Indian film to do so, beating the teaser of Bang Bang! (2014), which reached the mark in 13 hours.
