Plot summary
Periyasamy Thevar is a respected chief of a village in rural Madurai. His younger half-brother Chinnasamy Thevar and his nephew Mayan Thevar nurse a grudge against him, and the long quarrel between the households weighs on the whole village. His son Sakthivel has finished his education in London and comes home with Bhanumathi, his girlfriend, who is from Andhra Pradesh. Sakthivel says he intends to start a restaurant chain in Madras and to marry Bhanumathi. His father had hoped the young man's education would serve the villagers, and the news saddens him.

- According to Kamal Haasan, Thevar Magan was the first film ever written using screenwriting software, a program called Movie Magic.
- Sivaji Ganesan was given the Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards for Thevar Magan but refused to accept it; Kamal Haasan claimed he convinced him to turn it down.
- Kamal Haasan said the scene where a truck with steel rods jutting from its cargo reverses into a car was written for his earlier film Nayakan, but producer Muktha Srinivasan would not let a car be damaged, so it was used in Thevar Magan instead.
- Writer Kalaignanam said Kamal Haasan appropriated his story and took sole writing credit for Thevar Magan; the dispute went from the film council to a legal case, was settled out of court, and Haasan kept the credit.
- Cinematographer P. C. Sreeram wanted the whole of Thevar Magan to have a rustic colour, so he had a whole road laid with coconut husk for a shot of a single car driving along it at the start of the film.
- The unit first wanted Vijayakumar or S. S. Rajendran for Periya Thevar, but Kamal Haasan approached the retired Sivaji Ganesan instead, because it was his long-time wish to act with him; Ganesan finished his scenes in seven days.
- Ilaiyaraaja was a strong contender for the Best Music Direction National Film Award for Thevar Magan, but lost to A. R. Rahman for Roja after an eight-eight tie, with jury chairman Balu Mahendra voting for Rahman.
- Kamal Haasan's six-year-old daughter Shruti made her singing debut with Thevar Magan, singing one version of the song "Potri Paadadi Penne".
