Plot summary
On a plantation in the Cape Colony, Lady Brattling and her two sons work the family land. Michael manages the house; his brother Breck keeps to his room, deformed and alone, busy with an experiment meant to prove that a soul is an organic thing able to exist outside a human body. Michael's fiancée, Mary Anne Carew, arrives to marry him, and Lady Brattling objects, since she would rather the Brattling line die out than carry its madness further. Animals on the estate are killed, voodoo signs appear and are blamed on the family's black neighbors, and then a murder follows.
