Plot summary
In 1961, Harold Rusk leaves a valentine at Susan Jeremy's door, and Susan and her friend David crumple it up and laugh. Nineteen years later, Susan, divorced and raising a daughter, asks her ex-husband Tom to mind the girl and has her boyfriend Jack drive her to a hospital to collect the results of a physical exam. A figure in surgical garb watches her arrive and sabotages the elevator she rides. Her file disappears from Dr. Jacobs' office, and an intern named Harry finds her test results abnormal. Saxon and Beam order Susan kept for observation without explaining what they read, and a masked intruder moves through the wards, so that Susan cannot leave and cannot convince anyone of what she sees.
