Plot summary
Chicago housewife Birdee Pruitt goes on the Toni Post talk show expecting a free makeover, only to learn there that her husband, Bill, has been carrying on with Connie, her closest friend. She takes her daughter Bernice back to Smithville, Texas, the town where she grew up, and moves in with her mother Ramona and her father, who has Alzheimer's disease, along with her nephew Travis. Birdee looks for work, tries to rebuild her bond with Ramona, and meets again a high school classmate, Justin Matisse, who makes his romantic interest plain and whom Ramona hopes she will take up with. Bernice, who wants her father back, works against Justin's approaches, while Birdee faces former classmates she once snubbed as the school's beauty queen, and who take pleasure in her televised disgrace.
