Plot summary
In 2015, civil unrest erupts in a North African republic, and Zong Dawei, a former resident diplomat, and Cheng Lang, a new officer at the Foreign Ministry, are assigned to help Chinese nationals leave the country. The two believe their work is finished until they learn that a group of compatriots making for the border is still caught inside the fighting and waiting for rescue. Unarmed, the pair disobey their orders and set out after the group. The route crosses the desert and ground held by rebel forces. About a hundred and twenty-five Chinese citizens are still in the country, and the two men are meant to lead them home.
