Plot summary
Oscar Ramirez farms rice in Banaue, in the northern Philippines, until the crops stop paying. He brings his wife Mai and their children to Metro Manila hoping for something better. A cheap room they rent proves a swindle, and the police remove them from the building as squatters. The family settles in a vacant shack in the slums of Tondo. Manila Armored Couriers takes Oscar on as a security officer once the guards learn of his military past. His first shifts are spent with Douglas Ong, a senior officer whose earlier partner died in a robbery six months before. Worried about where the family lives, Ong offers them an empty apartment of his in Makati. Mai finds work at a nightclub there.
