Plot summary
Pedro Pelaez tells his student Jose Burgos and fellow priest Mariano Gomez about Apolinario de la Cruz, a man executed by the Spanish after he was refused the priesthood because of his race. Pelaez and the two priests resist friars of the religious orders, led by Jose Mosqueda, who want control of parishes administered by Filipino secular clergy. An earthquake in Manila in 1863 kills Pelaez, and Burgos teaches at the University of Santo Tomas, close to his students Felipe Buencamino and Paciano Mercado. Under Governor-General Rafael Izquierdo, natives at Fort San Felipe lose their tax exemptions, and a mutiny paid for by radical elites through Francisco Zaldua fails. Gomez, Burgos and Jacinto Zamora stand accused of taking part.

- GomBurZa, a period drama about three Filipino priests, was shot in only 17 days, and the scene of their execution by garrote took a single day in Tayabas.
- While filming in Tayabas, director Pepe Diokno remarked that the weather coincided with their shooting, as the clouds darkened and strong winds occurred in the afternoon.
- Actors were barred from working on another project during filming and had to learn Spanish, which Diokno found a challenge in casting; Piolo Pascual delivers a monologue in Spanish for around five minutes.
- To fill gaps in the history, director Pepe Diokno used creative liberties, including the portrayal of Francisco Zaldua, who was killed alongside the Gomburza and whose role in history is still debated.
