Plot summary
Ricardo Villena built his fortune on his own, and now bankruptcy is close. He has been selling off his remaining real estate, and he takes his grandchildren with him to Tondo, the district where he was raised, installing them in Alapaap, a decaying building that is still his. The young people are sheltered and spoiled, used to comfort, and he wants the hardship of life there to give them thicker skin and turn them into responsible adults. Salvaging his own sense of worth is part of the reason he goes. The district he finds is not the community he remembers, and nothing there looks the way it did when he left it.
