Plot summary
At Wilson High School, Matt Stevens runs the rackets: protection money from classmates, stolen tests sold for a fee, and a run for student body president against Kelly Roberts, with the votes fixed in advance. His gang includes Slick, Dusty, and his girlfriend Lita Owens, and young Homer Davis adores him. Homer asks Matt to arrange a date with Wanda Anderson, a newcomer who also catches the eye of Kelly's shy best friend, Bob Williams. Lita is jealous when she hears Matt talk about Wanda. At home Matt has every possession he could want, but his parents travel constantly and are never there. Most of the school despises him, and when some students resist his power, Kelly stands up to him.
