Plot summary
Sister Paxton, nineteen, and Sister Barnes, twenty, are missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Boulder, Colorado. Mr. Reed has expressed interest in their church, so they visit his home. Because they may enter a house only when a woman is present, he tells them his wife is in the kitchen preparing a blueberry pie. He says he spent decades studying theology, and his remarks about their faith unsettle the two women. When Reed steps out to speak with his wife, they try to leave and find the front door locked. At their church, Elder Kennedy notices they are two hours late and sets out to look for them.

- Hugh Grant was cast as the sinister Mr. Reed only after writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods saw him playing six different characters in Cloud Atlas (2012).
- Heretic kept shooting through the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike under an interim agreement, and Beck and Woods shot the whole film in chronological order in Vancouver on a budget of under $10 million.
- The LDS Church condemned Heretic for its portrayal of violence against women, then published an article on missionary safety meant to answer journalists' questions about the safety and well-being of missionaries.
- Co-writer and director Bryan Woods said the script was prompted by his father's death from esophageal cancer and the questions it raised about what happens after death.
