Plot summary
Three hundred years ago, the samurai Kazamatsuri carries off a sword of priceless worth to the clan, one that Shogun Tokugawa had donated eighty years before when he made the clan the local rulers. Heishiro Inukai, the young son of the lord's counselor, rides after it himself so the clan will not bear the shame, with Shintaro and Tadasuke at his side and clan ninjas following. Kazamatsuri wounds the young man and strikes down one of his companions. Heishiro recovers at the forest home of a lone samurai and his daughter Koharu, where the older man argues against continuing the fight. Kazamatsuri, in the meantime, takes lodging in a nearby town at a house run by Okatsu.

- The film's opening titles, with samurai performing kata silhouetted against a red background, were referenced in blue and black in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 1, which also used Hotei's instrumental track "Shin Jingi Naki Tatakai" as background music.
- Samurai Fiction is nearly all black-and-white, but colour is used dramatically: the screen flashes red whenever a character is killed, and colour also appears at the film's beginning and end.
- The stolen sword at the centre of the plot was a personal possession of Toshiro Mifune, the star of many of Akira Kurosawa's samurai films, and one of Heishiro's closest friends is named Kurosawa.
- Samurai Fiction was the first full-length feature for writer-director Hiroyuki Nakano, previously a music video director for MTV Japan, and the first acting experience for Japanese rock star Tomoyasu Hotei.
