Jay Johnson

Jay Johnson is an American ventriloquist and actor who became best known for playing Chuck Campbell and his dummy Bob on the sitcom Soap. Raised in Richardson, Texas, he found he had a flair for ventriloquism at about 11, performed publicly in high school, and made local commercials with an early figure called Squeaky. On Soap, his character treated Bob as real and turned rude and sarcastic as the dummy, often provoking violence against it. His other television work included guest spots on The Love Boat, Gimme a Break! and The Facts of Life, along with a starring role in Broken Badges (1990). He wrote and performed Jay Johnson: The Two & Only!, which opened on Broadway in 2006, brought him a 2006 Ovation Award for Best Solo Performance, and in 2007 won him a Tony for Best Special Theatrical Event. He also hosted two programs, Celebrity Charades (1979) and So You Think You Got Troubles (1983).
