Plot summary
Henry Poole has been diagnosed as terminally ill, so he buys a modest house in his hometown and settles in to wait, alone, with whiskey and frozen pizza. His quiet is interrupted by Esperanza Martinez, a neighbor certain that the water stain on his patio stucco is the face of Christ, who invites Father Salazar to bless it. Henry sees only a stain. He also gets to know Dawn Stupek and her young daughter Millie, who has not spoken a word since her father left the family, and whose tape recorder carries his own conversations back to him over the fence.
