Plot summary
An Imperial Japanese Navy captain, Tsuruhiko Kuroda, has been living alone on a remote Pacific island during World War II. A survival kit from a downed American plane washes ashore, and Kuroda, hearing someone talking to himself in the jungle, goes looking for the owner. The American pilot hides, then walks up to him at his camp on the beach. Both imagine killing the other, and neither speaks the other's language. Kuroda keeps his drinking water to himself, so the pilot retreats thirsty into the jungle. The captain lights a fire to smoke him out, and when they meet again at the fish trap, the pilot grabs what water he can and climbs a tree to hide.

SPOILER
Releases of the film outside the United States carried an alternate ending made by the producers without Boorman's input, in which a shell hits the building the two men are in and destroys it, killing them both.- Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts praised Hell in the Pacific and said it inspired his own film's opening, where a Japanese and an American become stranded on the same island and try to fight to the death before being interrupted.
