Plot summary
Shortly after graduation, Henry Sinclair, the shy valedictorian, meets Sam Maddox, a classmate known around school for the wrong reasons. He is headed to MIT, the university his domineering mother, Colette, chose for him. Sam works shifts in town and carries the aftermath of her father's suicide. They argue at first over what each assumes about the other's life. Henry apologizes and offers her a ride home when her shift ends, and a romance begins that matters to him far more than she can see. His acceptance to MIT and his wish to stay near Sam work against the plan his mother made for him.
