Plot summary

Cesare Santoro manages the Naples branch of the Pasquetti transport firm and has no patience for the conduct of two employees, the accountant Antonio Guardalavecchia and the bookkeeper Giuseppe Colabona. He threatens to transfer them to Sardinia, and the next day he dies. Both men now aim at his vacant post. The doorman Napoleone advises them not to quarrel: Santoro left reports on every employee, and a letter says an inspector named M. Rossi will choose the new head of the agency. The two slip into the office after hours and get rid of their personnel files. Each then works out a separate way to win the inspector over. Colabona waits at the station with flowers, while Guardalavecchia engages Cavicchioni, a violent man, to fake an attack on Rossi's train.
