Plot summary
At the start of the 1960s, Dag Hammarskjöld, the United Nations Secretary-General, is drawn into the conflict in the Congo, newly independent from Belgium. Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese Prime Minister backed by the Soviet Union, faces Katanga secessionist Moïse Tshombe, whose cause is supported by a Belgian mining company. Hammarskjöld favors decolonization. He sets himself two goals: to broker a diplomatic bargain between the two men and to drive Belgian corporate interests out of the country. Congo's UN attaché, Conor O'Brien, brings him word of a campaign against Katanga's Baluba tribe, and when Tshombe declares Katanga independent, Lumumba appeals for a UN military intervention that Hammarskjöld turns down.
