- Walt Disney Studios paid $75 million for the worldwide distribution rights to Hamilton in February 2020, outbidding Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and Netflix, all of which had expressed interest in the film.
- To avoid an R rating, two uses of "fuck" were censored, but a third, partly unfinished one in the song "Say No to This" was kept, making Hamilton the first film released by Walt Disney Pictures to use the expletive.
- The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences disqualified Hamilton from the 93rd Academy Awards on July 6, 2020, citing a 1997 rule that recorded stage productions are not eligible, though Disney still submitted it to every awards guild.
- The film was edited from three June 2016 performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, shot before Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo and Ariana DeBose left the show, plus no-audience "setup shots" captured with a Steadicam, crane and dolly.
