Plot summary
Hank Cooper owns the California Atoms, who have gone years without a win, and he is deep in debt to two bookmakers, Charles Gwynn and Cal Wilson. They offer him a wager: if the Atoms win the Super Bowl, the debts are forgiven, and if they do not, the team belongs to them. In Yugoslavia, Andy Petrovic is overshadowed by his older brother, a local soccer star, until he finds that the family mule can send a ball astonishing distances. The mule's new fame reaches the Atoms' secretary, Debbie Kovac, through her parents' Yugoslavian newspaper. Cooper wants a halftime attraction to draw fans, and Gus draws them before Coach Venner puts him in the lineup as a place kicker.
