Gary Grimes

Biography

Gary Grimes is a retired American actor whose first major film role came in Summer of '42 (1971). Born in San Francisco, California, he played a teenager modeled on author Herman Raucher in that film, earning a 1972 Golden Globe nomination as Most Promising Newcomer and a BAFTA nomination as Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. He next appeared in Class of '44 (1973), a sequel that took his character to college. His other films include Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973) with John Wayne, The Spikes Gang (1974), whose cast included Ron Howard, Lee Marvin, and Charles Martin Smith, and the Disney movie Gus (1976), in which a mule kicks field goals. His screen output amounted to just six films, and he mostly stepped away from acting in the late 1970s, aside from a 1983 episode of Matt Houston. He later said the work no longer met his standards and that he was happy with his decision.
