Plot summary
Jesse, Calvin and Nicky have been friends since childhood in an impoverished area of Los Angeles, and each of them has lived through trauma and abuse. Jesse has not spoken for years because of what his stepfather did to him. Nicky may be about to become a father, though Keisha's family wants nothing to do with him. Calvin scores high enough for college, but he refuses to take his medication and tells the school guidance counselor he is damned. Greg has just come out of prison, mows lawns around the neighborhood for cash, and turns down an old acquaintance's shady work. Calvin's idea is to take the friends' violent video game personas outside, and the three start by clearing the shelves of a video store.
