Plot summary
Frances McCullen is a young waitress in New York City. While riding the subway, she finds a handbag. The ID inside belongs to Greta Hideg, so Frances returns the bag the next day. Greta, a lonely widow, invites Frances in for coffee. The two become friends. One evening at Greta's apartment, Frances opens a closet and sees many identical handbags, each with a name and phone number attached, including Frances' own. Disturbed, Frances ends the friendship. Greta then starts stalking her and tries to replace Frances' late mother. When Greta shows up at Frances' job, Frances goes to the police, but she learns a protection order will take months.
