Plot summary
Sir Richard McCreadie, a high-street fashion billionaire, has come out of an inquiry into financial and ethical abuses in his industry with his reputation damaged. He hires Nick, a mild-mannered journalist, to ghostwrite his memoirs, and Nick's research opens up the story of how McCreadie rose from a rebellious student at a British public school to a fashion merchant in the 1970s and 1980s. Meanwhile the family gathers on Mykonos for a Gladiator-themed 60th birthday party, complete with a Roman arena and a lion. The builders are undocumented immigrants, the lion is passive, celebrity guests are keeping their distance, and Syrian refugees have camped on the beach beside the property. McCreadie's ex-wife Samantha, his daughter Lily and his son Finn are all on the island.
